Eee 901 Linux
Aug. 12th, 2008 08:38 pmI've been asking a number of dutch computer shops, since they started advertising the Eee 901 with ms-windows, when they are going to offer the Linux version.
There are 2 reasons I want the Linux version: I don't want a single cent of my money to end up at Microsoft, and it has a bigger SSD.
The ones that replied (Not the smallest chains! Computerland and MyCom) said that they had no plans to do so.
Are all those shops really so mindboggling stupid, or are they just pretending?
According to The Register, in the UK the Linux version is outselling the MSWindows version.

Date: 2008-08-13 11:31 am (UTC)I have a 900, Linux version, that I got from Computerland. I think the only difference between the 901 and the 900 is the inclusion of the 'n'-wireless protocol. If you can make do with a 900, then you could get one of those.

Date: 2008-08-13 06:46 pm (UTC)As for the colours, I prefer the black one over the white, but that is not critical. The important things are that it is the 901 Linux version. At just under £ 300 the price is a bit cheaper than the EUR 399 it costs here.

Date: 2008-08-13 10:57 pm (UTC)I looked at the other ones, and they all have hard disks instead of solid state devices, and since I want it to travel, I think that is an important point. (Some versions of the Acer Aspire One do have an SSD, but it is half the size, and the RAM size is also half). So I stick with the Eee.
Of course in half a year's time there will be much nicer models, but that is unavoidable so I'm not going to worry over that.
