Les belles heures
Nov. 13th, 2005 10:51 pmToday I visited the Valkhof museum, to see a large number of books and miniatures from around 1410. This is a special exposition of (among others) work of the brothers Van Limburg. They were masters from Nijmegen, which is celebrating this year that it exists 2000 years. The exhibition of the most special part is very very special indeed, because the book, known as Les Belles Heures de Jean de Berry, [warning: link contains factual errors, at the least the geography is wrong, Nijmegen is definitely not currently in Flanders] is taken apart to be restored and published in facsimile. Therefore it will not very soon be seen all at once again, since you can only show two pages from a book.
It is really amazing how they painted such small detail while they didn't even have magnifying glasses. And of course, it is really wonderful that they have been preserved for 600 years. I expect that 600 years from now, most of our digital information will have been lost.
( Weird )
