Yohoho, and two bottles of rum
Sep. 3rd, 2005 05:40 pmI liked some exercise today. This, combined with the fact that a friend is moving away, a friend with who I sometimes went to the supermarket in Kranenburg, just across the border, gave me the idea to cycle there. It is nice to have some target, just cycling around idly isn't something I'm likely to do.
The way to Kranenburg is rather un-Dutch. It is going uphill and downhill, but mostly uphill, until you're in Berg en Dal (Hill and Valley), meanwhile passing the Heilig-Landstichting (Holy Land-foundation) and the Afrika Museum. Then, from Berg and Dal it is down long and steeply to Wyler, which is just across the border. I noticed that since I went there the last time, they must have adorned the (not so wide) road with red bicycle lanes. I managed to get downhill without braking once, which was good since my brakes aren't actually very well adjusted. Perhaps it was helped by the fact that my tyres could use a bit more inflation and therefore slowed me down a bit. From Wyler it is fairly but not completely horizontal to Kranenburg.
From the map I had estimated that the distance would be about 15 km so I expected a travel time of about an hour (because of the up-and-downness of the roads), but I managed it in about 50 minutes, even on the way back that had the long steep slope up from Dal back to Berg. I should have brought something to drink though, so in the supermarket I got a six-pack of some energy drink, which turned out to be a very good move.
Now I am nicely stocked up with cheap rum, dvd+rs and peppermint tea again :-) And I feel nicely exhausted :-)
