rhialtoLast night was the (somewhat delayed) Gobi Autumn party (renamed for the occasion to Winter Party). People come from far away to these and therefore I was booked for 3 guests staying over at my place. I had prepared by making space for 3 people on and near the couch; those who have seen my place know that this can be a considerable challenge.
I arrived in time for the potluck dinner (having skipped the workshops). As usual it was great and more than enough.
After the dinner a girl whom I had met at one of the monthly bi-cafés approached me to chat, and we more or less stayed together, chatting a bit, and dancing, the rest of the night. She danced in an almost subdued manner but not unsexily.
I'm not quite sure what she wanted tough. Perhaps I was the only person who she knew and wanted a safe, somewhat familiar face nearby. Or she was desperately attracted to me but too shy to show it (she was often close but just not touching). I subtly (probably too subtly) tried to test that theory when we were in the (snuggle)lounge by stoking the back of her hand for a second, which produced no reaction (that I could determine, anyway). I leaned more and more toward the former theory as the night wore on.
And as the night wore on, one by one my guests told me that they had found other places to sleep. So in the end I went home alone. And I didn't even get a goodnight kiss from mystery girl, she was off in quite a hurry. (but we did exchange email addresses)
Net result of the evening: sore feet (from dancing a lot), a couple of hugs, no snogs, no sex, no guests. And a hangover, although I didn't think I drank that much and only some of it was beer.
The night before I have played the "big greediness game". You bring some things that you have at home but not really want, wrap them up as presents, and in the game you unwrap some (not your own of course) and then, depending on the roll of the dice, they are exchanged between the players. In the end, you hopefully have some presents that you like. I got among other things some weird USB camera on a stick. NetBSD attaches it to the generic USB device and calls it a Chicony Electronics(0x0c45) USB camera(0x6005). I wonder how to obtain a driver for that.
In other news: much to my surprise (yes really I do tend to get rather cynical) I got a nice letter via OKCupid a couple of days ago. Of course it was from somebody from some far-away place who was going back there next week, although with plans to come back to the Netherlands later. Nevertheless I wrote a reply, I hope a nice one, but I haven't heard from them since.

Date: 2006-01-15 07:40 pm (UTC)but I find it quite special how subtly you try to find out what that girl really wants, instead of pushing her too hard in something that she might not like. I think you deserve a lot of respect for that great quality of yours!
I had a very nice evening. I will try to write about that a little later tonight on my LJ!
