Gr[ae]ylisting
May. 17th, 2008 07:14 pmThis morning I installed greylisting (or graylisting) on my mail server. Its disk was rattling all the time and when I looked at the mail server log file, a spam was delivered every 1-2 minutes or so.
I experimented a bit with the settings, and I discovered it wasn't really effective against mail that was sent by the mail forwarders of my ISP, but it does work nicely against any mail addressed to my own domain names. Since that is at least half the spam, it still has quite a noticeable effect.
I think I'll look into tightening up the filters at my ISP next, including immediate rejection of mail, rather than just marking the spam as I have done so far.
